On Thursday, January 28, 2021, the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council (SPLC) recognised seven organisations and one individual at the Council’s annual awards ceremony for their significant leadership in executing and supporting sustainable purchasing initiatives.

SPLC’s Leadership Awards recognise organisations that have demonstrated leadership consistent with SPLC’s Principles for Leadership in Sustainable Purchasing, by:

• Understanding the environmental, social, and economic impacts of their purchasing.

• Taking responsibility for the environmental, social, and economic impacts of their purchasing by committing to an action plan.

• Delivering on their commitment to improve the environmental, social, and economic impacts of their purchasing.

• Actively promoting internal and external innovation that advances a positive future.

• Soliciting and disclosing information that supports a marketplace of innovation.

Markit Wins Outstanding Case Study Recognition

A small number of organisations, including Markit, received an Outstanding Case Study Certificate. Markit was awarded recognition for its contribution of a valuable case study, “Providing Access to Sustainable IT Products Through a Global Marketplace”, to the online library of case studies in SPLC’s online community.

Abstract of Markit’s Case Study: Providing Access to Sustainable IT Products Through a Global Marketplace

In January 2020, Markit began a project to raise awareness of, and provide access to, available (in-stock) IT hardware and accessories that meet various environmental standards in 35 countries. The main objective is to serve the growing demand in sustainable IT procurement from Markit’s 10,000+ international clients (including 20% of Forbes 2000).

Within one month over 25,000 IT products had been labelled with various tags e.g. TCO Certified, EPEAT, ENERGY STAR, FSC, PEFC, 80PLUS and noise emission levels.

Through the online Markit marketplace IT buyers can now easily find, compare (price, availability and delivery times can be compared in real time) thousands of “sustainable IT products”.

This project is part of a wider Markit initiative to Help IT procurement in international “Go Greener” and standardise their sustainable indirect IT purchasing requirements and to inspire other IT resellers to follow suit.

About Sustainable Purchasing

Sustainable purchasing -where organisations use their purchasing power to advance the long-term health and vitality of society, economies, and the planet – is gaining momentum around the world, as purchasing organisations recognise the social and environmental impact of their procurement, and suppliers embrace sustainability as a critical element of their value proposition. “We are proud to reward and recognise the winners of these awards for their outstanding Sustainable Purchasing Leadership efforts,” said Donna Westerman, CEO of the SPLC. “It was clear to our judges that their vision and strategy execution will help guide us toward a more sustainable world.”

About the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council

Founded in 2013, the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council convenes buyers, suppliers, and public interest advocates to develop programs that simplify and standardise sustainable purchasing efforts by large organisations. The Council has quickly attracted, from a wide variety of sectors and regions, more than 180 members with over $200 billion in collective purchasing power. In 2015, SPLC released Guidance for Leadership in Sustainable Purchasing v1.0, which has been called the “most comprehensive literature to date” on sustainable purchasing. Hundreds of organisations are now using SPLC’s Guidance, resources, and online community of practice to create strategic sustainable purchasing programs or enhance existing ones.
