BCG - Overcoming Challenges of the Global Partner Model in IT Procurement

 ·

Damian Krawczyk is the IT Manager for the CEE System at BCG (Boston Consulting Group) and at Markit Forum 2023 he took us on an enlightening journey showing how BCG deal with the complexities of choosing, vetting, and working with global vendor partners.

BCG expect their suppliers to consistently deliver services of the highest quality, which can be challenging for suppliers. Meeting these expectations requires an elevated level of expertise, resources, and commitment from the supplier.

Why supplier selection is so complicated in large company like BCG?

According to Damian, there is long and rigorous supplier selection process that involves analysing numerous factors, such as quality, price, delivery time, payment terms, and compliance. This process can be time-consuming and resource-intensive, requiring input from various departments and stakeholders to ensure that the supplier meets all the necessary requirements.

Damian added that large companies often have strict regulations and procedures in place for purchasing, to ensure compliance, reduce risk, and protect the company's interests - these can make it difficult for suppliers to meet all the necessary criteria.

COMPLEXITY IN THE IT CATEGORY

One of the primary reasons is the complexity of the IT products and services being procured. IT products and services are incredibly diverse, and often have numerous specifications and requirements that must be met.

At BCG Damian and his team had to find ways to cooperate locally with global suppliers, who could act locally, through the global power of their connections.

Why did BCG choose to work with marketplaces like Markit?

To deliver the best services to clients, BCG needs to work with reliable suppliers who can provide high-quality products and services at a reasonable price. A marketplace, which is a platform that connects buyers and sellers, can be an ideal supplier for BCG for several reasons.

Marketplaces offer a wide range of products from different sellers, which allows BCG to choose the most suitable products for their employees.

Marketplace suppliers should, like Markit, have fast and efficient delivery systems that ensure products are delivered on time and in good condition.

Easy roll-out of new products or services is critical to BCG's success, so as an example, Markit’s marketplace has a user-friendly platform that allows BCG to easily browse, select and purchase products. This saves the time of local IT teams and effort and makes the roll-out process smoother and more efficient.

Pricing transparency is crucial for BCG to ensure that it is getting a fair price for the products and services it is purchasing, so a transparent pricing policy that allows BCG to compare prices and make informed purchasing decisions is a key selection factor.

Finally, marketplaces can/should offer the right reporting instruments so planning future budgets is easy and time efficient.

Damian concluded by saying that, by working with marketplace suppliers, BCG can deliver high-quality services to its clients, maintain its competitive advantage, and achieve its goals.
